Brazilian Mining Giant Buys Into Northern Railway

The Brazilian mining giant Vale announced on Tuesday the purchase of 51 per cent of Mozambique's Northern Corridor Development Company (SDCN).

SDCN is the private consortium which is the partner of Mozambique's publicly owned port and rail company (CFM) in the Nacala port and rail systems in the north of the country. The lease on the Nacala systems is held by the Northern Development Corridor (CDN), in which 51 per cent of the shares are owned by SCDN and 49 per cent by CFM.

Maputo, Mozambique, 29 Sept – The Zambezi River, in central Mozambique will need to be made navigable by 2012 in order for it to be possible to transport coal along it, the chairman of the Mozambican Association for Coal Development (AMDC) said Tuesday in Maputo.

With coal mining at Moatize, in the central province of Tete, carried out by mining companies Vale (Brazil) and Riversdale Mining (Australia), Mozambique expects to start producing over 20 million tons of coal per year in the next five years.

US charges tobacco companies for bribery in Malawi

The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged two global tobacco companies with violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) for paying more bribes to government officials in in Malawi and other countries to illicitly obtain tobacco sales contracts.  Between 2002 and 2003, Universal subsidiaries paid a total of $850,000 to high-ranking Malawian government officials that were not accurately recorded in Universal's books and records. Lynas has so far been the most active. Global Metals is active in exploiing rare earths in Malawi.
The China connection is interesting. In 2007 Lynas acquired New Rare Earths Resource in Malawi. The question that immediately arose was whether  Australia would allow Chinese  to take over Lynas and thus corner a mineral that the West considered strategic. Rather than by Lynas, China may chose to go it alone in Malawi which may partly explain Chinese excitement about Malawi.

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) announced early last week that it has started the licence revocation process of Global Advanced Integrated Networks (G-Mobile), a company that would have been the country's third mobile phone service provider.
