Sunbird in K1.2bn room renovations at Nkopola - The Nation Online: Sunbird Tourism plc, a Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE)-listed hotel chain, says it has invested about K1.2 billion in the renovation and refurbishment of 55 rooms at Sunbird Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi.

In an interview during a familiarisation tour of bookers and tour operators on Saturday at Sunbird Nkopola Lodge, Sunbird group sales and marketing manager Temwa Kanjadza said the investment is part of their product improvement plan.

Peermont ends hotel management deal - The Nation Online: South Africa’s Peermont Hotels Limited has terminated its 10-year management contract midway through the agreement, leaving Malawi Government with the task to identify new managers for Umodzi Park which includes Bingu International Convention Centre (Bicc).

In an interview yesterday, Umodzi Park Holdings chief executive officer Master Maliro confirmed the development, saying Peermont is not only opting out of a franchise management agreement in Malawi but with all agreements in southern African countries.

The Tourism and Hotel Board has awarded hotels and lodges star rating based on their improved performance.
In a statement, the board said it has awarded the three-star status to two hotels—sunbird Ku Chawe in Zomba
and Lotus by Serendib Hotel in Blantyre and three lodges Chelinda Camp in Nyika National Park in Rumphi, Mvuu
Camp Lodge in Liwonde National Park and Game Haven in Bvumbwe, Thyolo.

Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE)- listed hospitality chain, Sunbird Tourism PLC, has said its new100-bedroom three-star hotel to be constructed in Salima District will cost K3.5 billion.

Sunbird Tourism PLC Chief Executive Officer, Yusuf Olela said in an interview that the project is expected to commence in August 2018.

The development will bring the number of Sunbird hotels in the district to two, after Sunbird Livingstonia."

Conglomerate Press Corporation Limited (PCL) plc has acquired a 10 percent stake in Sunbird Tourism plc, extending its investment interests into the tourism sector.

PCL Group Chief Executive Officer George Partridge confirmed the acquisition in an interview yesterday.

“Yes it is true that we have acquired a 10 percent shareholding in Sunbird Tourism plc. We have been talking about expanding our investment base to include tourism for some time and we thought this was a good starting point,” Partridge said."

Malawi Stock Exchange-listed hospitality chain, Sunbird Tourism PLC, has disclosed plans to

construct a 100-bedroom three-star hotel in Salima. The development will bring the number of Sunbird hotels in Salima District to two after Sunbird

Livingstonia.

Sunbird Board Chairman, Phillip Madinga, has said that the Salima lakeshore is accessible from

all parts of the country through tarred roads.

Madinga said, for a long time, there has been high demand for quality hotel facilities, mainly driven

by both leisure and business segments, from the source market of Lilongwe as well as the

Southern Regiom

•As a result, Sunbird PLC has embarked on a project to construct a new three-star hotel in a

phased manner to strengthen the company's competitiveness," Madinga said.

He said the new hotel "ill also have a 300-seater conference hall, health club, spa, swimming

participate in a four-year tourism development and promotion project to be coordinated by the

Department of Tourism and funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The project, which will run up to 2021, is aimed at benefitting tourism enterprises and local

communities surrounding them across the country.

The Department of Tourism in the Ministry of Industry Trade and Tourism has partnered Corner 
sun Destination Marketing to offer tourism, public relations and representation services in the US 
and North America markets. 
The partnership is from December 1 2017 and will run for two years. 
Director of Tourism, Isaac Katopola, said the objective of the partnership is to increase awareness 
and enhance visibility of Malawi as a tourist destination in the USA and North America in line with 
the strategic tourism framework for 2017-2022 tourism strategy, which is targeting an increase in 
arrivals from the current 804,000 to over one million tourists.
