Chileka Airport runway now open – The Nation Online: Renovations on the Chileka International Airport runway have been completed and the airport is now open to big aircrafts, the airport management has confirmed.

The airport was temporarily closed to big aircrafts on April 2019 to allow for renovations� after it developed cracks, raising safety concerns particularly by South African Airways (SAA) which announced it would halt flights to Blantyre until the situation was rectified.

Ulendo extends to Blantyre route - The Times Group Malawi: Barely three months after launching its Lilongwe-Mzuzu – Likoma Island route, Ulendo Airlink has announced that it is extending its services to Blantyre.

A press statement says, starting from September 23 2019, Ulendo Airlink is set to introduce flights between Lilongwe and Blantyre.

Ulendo Airlink Chief Executive Officer, Rob McConaghy, says the addition of Blantyre to Ulendo’s domestic network was designed to offer comprehensive air services to all key destinations in the country.

Figures from the Malawi Airlines show that the number of passengers went up by 82 percent from 90,000 2013 to 164,000 in 2018.

Malawi Airlines Chief Executive Officer, Hailemelekot Mamo, said in an interview the airliner expects the numbers to grow to over 200,000 passengers this year.

Air Cargo Malawi (ACM) nas disclosed plans to encourage the country's farmers to take

advantage ot various opportunities it offers to boost Malawi's expoäs.

ACM Board Chairperson, Mike Mlomöwa, said local farmers could take advantage ot an Emirates

cargo plane which flies into Malawi a couple ot times a week to haul their cargo to boost their

export businesses.

Mlombwa said ACM is supposed to expon 103,000 kgs of merchandise tnrougn the plane but that

oftentimes, it leaves Malawi empty.

Malawi News Agency Online - Construction of Mzuzu International Airport to start in January –Mutharika: "Mzuzu, November 12, 2017: President Arthur Peter Mutharika has assured people in northern region that his government is geared to start the construction of Mzuzu International Airport in January, 2018.

President Mutharika was speaking Saturday evening at Katoto Roundabout on his arrival in the region where he is expected to carry out a number of official duties.

Mutharika said it is the wish of his government that Mzuzu City should have a modern international airport, saying it will open up the northern region.

“I have directed the Minister of Transport and Public Works to make sure that the construction of Mzuzu modern international airport should start without any excuses by January next year,” he said."

Kenya Airways has received approval from the Government of Malawi to begin flying into Chileka Airport in Blantyre effective June 3.

In a letter to the airline from Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Government of Malawi, Moffat Chitimbe, Kenya Airways was also given approval to resume 5th freedom traffic rights on the Lilongwe-Lusaka sector.

“I am pleased to convey government approval for your operations into Chileka Airport, Blantyre, and the exercise of 5th Freedom Traffic Rights on the Lilongwe-Lusaka sector as per your filed schedules effective 3rd "
