Demos to dent economy—ICAM – The Nation Online: Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (Icam) says it is yet to quantify the exact loss of business and damage to property as a result of post-elections demonstrations.

In its letter dated August 1 2019 addressed to Malawi Law Society (MLS), the accountants’ body said demonstrations have resulted in destruction of property, loss of business, erosion of the country’s investors’ confidence and compounded people’s uncertainty on economic gains.

Political uncertainty takes toll on trade fair - The Nation Online: Some countries are viewing Malawi as a ‘no-go zone’ following the disputed May 21 Tripartite Elections, whose results attracted protests, mainly from the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), in some parts of the country.

The political atmosphere has forced the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) to postpone to August the 31st Malawi International Trade Fair, earlier scheduled for June 20-30 2019 after the countries that confirmed their participation withdrew, citing existence of political uncertainty.

The Economics Association of Malawi (Ecama) says the key thematic areas to take centre stage

during the Mid-year Budget Review Meeting should be how government plans to cut unnecessary

expenditure and what mitigating factors it has put in place to mitigate the dry weather conditions

A press statement signed by Speaker of the National Assembly, Richard Msowoya, indicates that

the budget review meeting for the 2017/2018 Financial Year is scheduled to take place in the

Parliament Chamber from February 5 to March 2.

This will be the second meeting in the current 47th Session of Parliament

Speaking ahead of the gathering, Ecama President, Chikumbutso Kalilombe, said stakeholders

will be interested to know how government will allocate resources to consolidate gains, at a time

when the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has missed its mid-year revenue target
