Inflation back to double digit – The Nation Online: Malawi’s headline inflation inched up by 0.8 percentage points to 10.4 percent in November�as food prices continued biting hard, a development the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM)�says is still manageable.�

Published figures from National Statistical Office (NSO) show that food inflation stood at 17.2 percent in November while non-food inflation was seen at 5.5 percent in the review month.

Inflation rises to 9.6% in October - The Times Group Malawi: Malawi’s headline inflation inched up by 0.4 percentage points to 9.6 percent in October 2019 from 9.2 percent in September, latest figures from National Statistical Office (NSO) show.

The NSO figures show that food inflation went up from 13.9 percent in September to 16.0 percent.

Non-food Inflation decreased to 4.3 percent from 5.4 percent in the preceding two months.

Inflation eases to 9.2 percent - The Times Group Malawi: Malawi’s headline inflation eased by 0.3 percentage points to 9.2 percent in September 2019 from 9.5 percent in August, latest figures from the National Statistics Office (NSO) show.

This is first time for inflation to drop since May this year. However, the rate remains high when compared to this year’s lowest record of 7.9 percent registered in February.

The NSO figures show that food inflation stood at 13.9 percent in the month under review from 14.6 percent in August 2019.

This is despite a stable increase in maize prices, Malawi’s staple food, currently trading between K12,500 and K15,000 per 50 Kilogramme bag in some parts of the country.

Inflation rate for April 2019 eased by 0.2 percentage points to 9.1 percent, a development monetary authorities say signifies that the country is on course to achieve a five percent inflation rate target in the medium-term.

Published figures from National Statistical Office (NSO) show that at 9.1 percent, April inflation rate is lower than the 9.7 percent recorded during the same period last year.

Food and non-food inflation during the month was recorded at 13.8 and 5.4 percent, respectively, according to NSO.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected a solid downward trajectory of inflation beyond 2018, converging at 5 percent in the long term.

The Bretton Woods institution has since said it expects Malawi’s inflation to average 9 percent this year, in line with an earlier projection by Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM).

IMF says it expects inflation to close at 9.5 percent by end of 2018.

This is despite inflation rising for the third straight month in September although at a slower pace.

Headline inflation edged up by 0.2 percentage points to 9.5 percent in September 2018, from 9.3 percent recorded in August 2018.

Rising electricity tariffs is expected to put pressure on inflation In September, Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) increased the price of fuel by an average of five percent, a development which compelled service providers to push up their prices as well. During the same month, Mera also approved a 31.8 percent tariff hike for Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) over a four-year period. Maize prices, on the other hand, have also gone up to an average of K7 500 per 50 kilogramme (kg) bag from an average of K5 000 per 50 kg bag some months before.

The Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) says it targets an inflation rate of five percent in the medium

The development comes when inflation inched up in January from 7.1 percent to 8.1 percent

following a rebasing process by the National Statistical Office.

In its sixth Monetary Policy Statement titled 'Sustaining Low Inflation Amidst New Risks' released

on Tuesday, RBM says the monetary policy stance during the first half of 2018 will focus on

entrenching disinflation and attaining the targeted five percent inflation in the medium term and

maintain a minimum of three months import cover of official foreign exchange reserves.

The National Statistical Office (NSO) has said it is in the process of rebasing the Consumer Price

Index (CPI), adding that this has resulted in the delay to release inflation figures for January.

Traditionally, NSO releases inflation figures on the 15th day of the following month but, as of

yesterday, it was yet to publish inflation figures for January.

NSO assistant Commissioner for Economics, Lizzie Chikoti, has confirmed the development.

"You are very correct that NSO releases inflation figures on the 15th of every month. This month,

the delay is due to the rebasing exercise that we have been doing.

Investment management and advisory firm, Alliance Capital, nas predicted that inflation would

average nine percent in 2018 despite a double threat ot tall armyworms and dry spell which have

attected maize production, threatening the lives of 850,000 households.

Food remains the biggest contributor to the Consumer Price Index witn a weighing ot 50.2

percent

The nine percent average inflation could be 2.5 percentage points better than the 11.5 percent

recorded in 2017.

In its Economic Repon for 2017 and Outlook tor 2018, Alliance Capital said it expects inflation to

continue declining albeit marginally in 2018 on the back of uninterrupted food supply, a stable

currency and tight fiscal and monetary policies.

Food has a huge weight at 50.1 percent in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), a measure that

Malawi's headline inflation has hit single digit in August, falling by 0.9 percentage points from
 10.2  percent in July to 9.3 percent in August, the National Statistical Office (NSO) has said. 
This is the first time in 80 months that Malawi has recorded single digit inflation since December 
2011, when inflation was at 9.8 percent. This year's July inflation is 13.5 percentage points better than 
the 22.8 percent recorded in July 

last year.

Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Goodall Gondwe has hinted at the possibility of a reduction in interest rates after inflation eased to 16.1 percent in February from 18.2 percent in January.

Latest figures released by the National Statistics Office show that inflation, also described as the rate at which the price of goods and services fluctuate, slowed by two percentage points in the past month. This should come as good news to consumers as this means there will be an improvement in disposable incomes."
