Tobacco output falls below demand

Malawi's tobacco production for this year is estimated at about 149 million kilogrammes (kg),

almost 12.8 percent less than international market demand, results of the first crop assessment

have shown.

For the 2018 marketing season, buyers need 171 million kg of all types of tobacco.

This may still be good news to some tobacco growers as the leaf is likely to fetch better prices if

buyers scramble for it.

Last year, the country grew about 124 million kg of all types of tobacco.

Martha Chirambo O September 29, 2017 o Comments  Government expects the Kam'mwamba Coal -Fired Power Plant Project to start this November  after signing 10 agreements with China last week.  According to Minister of Finance, and Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe  government has agreed with their counterparts in China to have major shareholding of 85  percent while China Gezhouba Group will have 15 percent.

28 March 2013 - Australian coal resources development company Intra Energy Corporation (IEC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malawi’s government for the construction and operation of a 120 MW coal fired power station. The company is in the pre-feasibility stage of developing a minimum 120 MW power station at Chipoka, Malawi by no later than the end of 2016. The project would include the design, engineering, construction, operation and maintenance of the power plant and its ancillary infrastructure and IEC is considering potential expansion to 200 MW (net) or doubling capacity with a second plant of 120 MW."
