Malawi gets K27bn boost on Nacala road project – The Nation Online: Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Joseph Mwanamvekha has committed to prudent use of $36.7 million (about K27 billion) for the Multinational Nacala Road Corridor Development Project phase five.

The minister said in Lilongwe during the signing of the agreement with African Development Bank (AfDB)� group that government will endeavour to implement the project in accordance with the provisions of the financing agreements as well as Malawi’s own Public Finance Management rules.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) on Wednesday granted Malawi $37 million (about K27 billion) financial support for the completion of phase V of the Nacala Corridor project in the country.

Once completed the project is expected to, among other things, improve transport infrastructure in the country that remains a concern for private sector’s doing business in the country.

The port’s operation will reduce the distance from Songwe on the border between Malawi and Tanzania, to Dar es Salaam Port. From Songwe to Mbeya, it is 120 kilometres (km) while from Songwe to Dar es Salaam, it is 1 000 km.

Central East African Railways (Cear) has posted a 52 percent decline in profit to $2.1 million (about K1.6 billion) in the first quarter of this year, a situation company officials say is due to an unmet target for cargo.

Speaking to journalists in Blantyre on Friday, Cear finance manager Christina Chithila said the profit declined from $4.4 million (about K3.3 billion) achieved in the first quarter of 2018.

China Railways has proposed the construction of a $2.5bn rail link between the neighbouring states of Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe. As with the high-speed, east-to-west links in Kenya and Tanzania, the aim will be to give landlocked countries – and the Chinese companies operating there – access to Indian Ocean ports.
According to the website Macauhub, the “Trans-Zambezi” line was discussed by a delegation from China Railways, headed by Vice President Shao Gang, which flew into Harare at the end of last month

Sovereign signs rail MoU in Malawi: "PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Junior Sovereign Metals has signed a memorandum of agreement (MoU) with an infrastructure consortium led by majors Vale and Mitsui, for rail freight, port access and port handling services for graphite product from the Malingunde project, in Malawi.
Sovereign said on Tuesday that the MoU covered the provision of services for up to 100 000 t/y of concentrates over a period of 20 years, with the consortium known as Central East African Railways (CEAR) to supply and maintain all infrastructure, equipment and personnel required to provide the service."

Malawi News Agency Online - CEAR exceeds previous volumes moved: "Blantyre, August 08, 2017: The Central East African Railways (CEAR) says the volume of cargo the company has moved in the first half of 2017 has surpassed the volumes moved in the last 10 years.

CEAR Public Relations Officer, Chisomo Mwamadi disclosed this in a questionnaire response attributing the trend to the improvements and investments the company has made in locomotives, wagons, rail track and systems.

“During the first half of the year, we managed to transport 60 percent of our budgeted cargo volume for the period.

“However, compared to the same period last year, we have moved 60 percent more cargo in 2017 as compared to 2016."

A consortium made up of Mota-Engil of Portugal and the China National Complete Engineering Corporation (CNCEC) has signed a contract to build a 500km railway in Mozambique. The $1.4bn scheme will connect the Moatize coal mining area near the Malawi border with the port of Macuse, reports Macauhub.

The consortium, which is equally divided between the two companies, was picked by the client for the project, Thai Moçambique Logística (TML) out of a shortlist of seven. The other contractors included ones from Brazil, South Korea and another Chinese company. "
