Trade on the AHL Commodities Exchange (AHCX) has rolled out on a high note with 30 metric tonnes of soya beans sold on the first day at prices ranging from K160 (about 40 US cents) to K180 (45 US cents) per kilogramme.

AHCX head of operations Davis Manyenje told Nation Online on Thursday the trade, which took place at warehouses in Mponela, Dowa and Lilongwe, is expected to pick up as time goes by, largely buoyed by the government’s waiver for farmers to export their produce amid an export "

Illovo Factory: Multi-national company that currently employs 10 000 people
Illovo Sugar (Malawi) Limited has committed K8 billion (about $20m) to capital projects in both agricultural and factory operations. This represents a 166 percent rise from last year’s K3 billion (about $7.5m).

Each year, the Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE)-listed sugar manufacturer budgets for capital expenditure across all its operations at both factories and estates (Nchalo and Dwangwa).

The money is used on a range of things including the replacement of equipment in both agriculture and factory operations"

The foreign currency situation in the country continues to improve, with the import cover climbing to 1.63 months as of May 10, official figures have indicated.

Last Friday's daily money market report by Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) shows that official foreign reserves jumped to US$306 million by May 10 from US$240 million at the beginning of the month."
