Hundreds of jobs linked to Castel Malawi Limited, producers of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, are at stake after the company threatened to close its business in protest of high excise tax rate.

In a statement issued yesterday, Castel Malawi, which took over from Carlsberg Malawi Brewery, said its efforts to negotiate with Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) on the matter have failed and the tax collector issued a final notice against the company.

Overall, the central bank remains optimistic of a positive economic outlook.

RBM maintains its projection that real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth would rebound to 5.0 percent in 2019 from 4.0 percent estimated in 2018.

The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, however, slashed Malawi’s GDP growth to 4.5 percent and 5 percent, respectively.

Government is in the process of setting up a K250 million state-of-the-art leather design studio which will be used to produce leather materials.

The studio is being constructed with funding from the European Union through the Malawi Enterprise Productivity Enhancement (Mepe) project under the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.

Mepe project is under the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) Regional Integration Support Mechanism initiative."

Govt to continue importing cement products: "Government says it will continue importing cement products to supplement local production.

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism says such is the case because the domestic production has not reached its peak due to inconsistent power supply.

Since the country started experiencing power problems last year, local cement manufacturers scaled down production, a situation which forced contractors to start importing cement products from other countries such as Zambia.

According to Deputy Director of Small and Medium Enterprises in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism Wiskes Mkombezi, the window created some challenges on the part of the buyers, as most traders took advantage of the situation by over charging the prices on the market.

Chinese company launches groundbreaking ceremony for textile factories in Malawi - Global Times: "A Chinese company on Monday launched a groundbreaking ceremony for textile factories in Malawi, which the government says will greatly promote its industrialization drive.
China-Malawi Cotton Company builds the factories in Malawi's central Salima district, about 93 km from the capital Lilongwe, with an investment of 44.2 million U.S. dollars in the first phase and a further 36 million dollars in the second phase.
"This is what we have been trying to do in our efforts to add value to our products. This is a dream come true for Malawi to become a producing country instead of a consuming country," Malawian President Peter Mutharika said at the ceremony.
He said that with the factories, the country could export textile products to regional and international markets.
The Malawian government has created a favorable environment for foreign investment, he added.
Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Wang Shiting said the project signifies the growing cooperation between the two countries.
"China is a sincere friend of Africa and we are committed to developing Africa," Wang said.
Ju Wenbin, chairman of the China-Malawi Cotton Company, said the project comprises a full-fledged cotton spinning factory, a weaving mill and a towel factory.
The first phase of the project will be completed in June next year and 1,500 local people will be employed.

Lilongwe with expectations of boosting the country's groundnuts industry and providing a ready

market to farmers.

Afri-Oils Limited Chairperson, Tm de Borde, said the firm seeks to move smallholder farmers up

the value chain, while expanding the volume of fair trade and other value-added peanuts produced

for international and domestic markets.

Mikolongwe College targeting youths in selected districts in the Southern Region.
This comes at a time when Dapp discovered that the business of making shoes could help Malawi
gain more foreign exchange through shoe exports.
Mikolongwe College Deputy Principal, Zacheria Mano, said Dapp has partnered Technical
Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education Authority and Sympany based in the Netherlands for the
programme to run for three years.

Ahead of the third Malawi Investment Forum (MIF) in June this year, Malawi Investment and

Trade Centre (Mitc)—a one-stop investment centre—has outlined three projects to roll out this

year.

The projects, according to Mitc spokesperson Deliby Chimbalu, are the construction of Lilongwe

Grand Business Park and five-star hotel along the Lilongwe West Bypass Road, the fertiliser

project between Nkhotakota-based Mtalimanja Holdings Limited and an Indian investor and

construction of 2 500 housing units in Lilongvve, Blantyre and Mzuzu by South African investor

Nedebe Group, a company that focuses on infrastructure and property development.

A new firm, Mount Meru Millers, has invested $25 million (about K18 billion) to set up a cooking

oil factory, creating 250 jobs in Dowa District.

The plant, located at Mgubo Village near Lumbadzi Trading Centre, is the fifth factory the

company has opened in sub-Saharan Africa with others in Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia and

Uganda.

Malawi News Agency Online - AICC hails textile manufacturing company project: "BLANTYRE, January 29, 2018: The African Institute of Corporate Citizenship (AICC) says it is optimistic that the textile manufacturing company currently under construction in Salima will help in boosting the cotton sector through improved selling prices at markets.

Malawi Cotton Company Limited, a subsidiary of China Africa Cotton Development is the one constructing the factory.

AICC Project Officer for Cotton Platform Isaac Tembo said this on Wednesday in interview with Malawi News Agency.

He said the coming of this local textile factory will eliminate the fears of fluctuating international market prices by stabilising prices on the domestic markets leading to more lucrative offers to local farmers.

“The anticipated local textile industry will push cotton production upwards, because of the increased demand of cotton lint which will prompt farmers to produce more due to the already available market,” Tembo said."
