Employers call for economic diversification from raw produce – The Nation Online: Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (Ecam) has added weight to calls for investments in sectors other than agriculture which has been persistently underperforming in recent years, denting the country’s economic growth.

Ecam, an apex body which represents employer interests, said as part of medium-term plans, it wants to work with government and other stakeholders in diversifying the economy into manufacturing and agro-processing as opposed to depending on tobacco and raw agriculture produce only.

Firm set to invest K37bn in agriculture – The Nation Online: Pyxus Agriculture Limite, a non-tobacco crops dealer, has announced that it will invest $50 million (about K37 billion) in the country’s agriculture sector in the next five years.

The firm, which started its operations in April this year, is a subsidiary of United Kingdom-based company Pyxus Agriculture Holding Limited, and it focuses on groundnuts and sunflower value addition ventures.

Speaking during a press conference in Lilongwe on Tuesday, Pyxus managing director Ronald Ngwira said the initial asset base investment was $11 million (K8 billion).

The Economics Association of Malawi (Ecama) has decried the country’s low levels of investments which it say is below the Sub-saharan Region (SSR)’s 20 percent average.

Published figures from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) World Economic Outlook (WEO) indicate that Malawi has one of the lowest rates of total investment in SSA, with the average rate standing at 14.9 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) from 2000 to 2017

Investment pledges jump 250% in 2018 | The Times Group: Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC) recorded investment pledges worth $1.49 billion (about K1.1 trillion) in 2018 from 105 companies that were issued with investment certificates.

The value of the pledges is 250 percent higher than the $400 million recorded from 42 firms in 2017.

Firm invests K50bn, set to list on MSE - The Nation Online: Newly-formed property development and management firm, Icon Properties Limited, says it has invested over K50 billion and plans to list on the Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE) before the year ends.

The firm, which was born after restructuring property companies in the MSE-listed Nico Holdings group portfolio as well as through a collaborative process with other property investors, was incorporated in Malawi on June 4 2018 and converted to a public limited company on October 11 this year.

As the countdown to the 2018 Malawi Investment Forum (MIF) continues, the Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (Mitc) has said it expects the event to attract 800 delegates.

Mitc Public Relations Manager, Deliby Chimbalu, said, so far, 300 delegates have confirmed their participation at the MIF slated for June 11 and and 12 at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe..

Chimbalu said Mitc is working with Malawi foreign missions to woo more delegates to attend the event."

Ahead of the third Malawi Investment Forum (MIF) in June this year, Malawi Investment and

Trade Centre (Mitc)—a one-stop investment centre—has outlined three projects to roll out this

year.

The projects, according to Mitc spokesperson Deliby Chimbalu, are the construction of Lilongwe

Grand Business Park and five-star hotel along the Lilongwe West Bypass Road, the fertiliser

project between Nkhotakota-based Mtalimanja Holdings Limited and an Indian investor and

construction of 2 500 housing units in Lilongvve, Blantyre and Mzuzu by South African investor

Nedebe Group, a company that focuses on infrastructure and property development.

Malawian company PRESSCANE Limited has unveiled plans to install a fertiliser manufacturing plant at its ethanol production site in Chikwawa at a cost of US$20 million.

The fertiliser plant is one of the components of a project the company has embarked to increase ethanol production by engaging farmers to grow and sell sugarcane to the ethanol distillery.

Presscane intends to use the ethanol production residues and some molasses for production of fertilisers at the proposed factory.

Presscane operations manager, Bryson Mkomaanthu, said installation works of the plant is planned to start mid next year for completion by end 2017."
