Malawi overproduces tobacco by 43.8 million kilogrammes - The Times Group Malawi: This year’s tobacco production has exceeded demand by 43.82 million kilogrammes (kgs), the Tobacco Commission (TC) said on Wednesday.

Briefing journalists in Lilongwe, TC Chief Executive Officer, Kaisi Sadala, said third round of crop estimates has revealed that the country has produced 193.4 million kgs against a demand of 149.56 million kgs.

Sadala said overproduction of the crop could provide buyers some room to negotiate for lower prices which could affect the growers in the long run.

Tobacco revenue has gone down by 35 percent six weeks into the 2019 Tobacco Marketing Season, figures released by Tobacco Commission (TC) showed on Friday.

The figures showed that Malawi realised $51.464 million (about K38 billion) compared to $78.948 million (about K58 billion) during same period last year representing 35 percent revenue decline.

Tobacco Earns K159 bn in 13 Weeks: The country has earned US$219 million, roughly K159 billion, from tobacco sales, the main cash crop, in thirteen weeks, a Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) official has confirmed.

Southern region manager Willard Singo told Zodiak the money has been realized after selling over 126 million kilograms of the green gold in all five tobacco auction flours across Malawi.

“We are impressed with how the market is progressing in spite of few challenges, but this year we have seen a great improvement,” said Singo.

Singo says at least 55 million kilograms of tobacco have been sold through Kanengo Auction Flours in Lilongwe and a total of US$96 million, roughly K70 billion, has been earned.

Malawi has so far realised a total of $166.7 million from sales of top export crop, tobacco, a 33.6 percent jump when compared to same period last year, thanks to increased volumes traded, figures from regulator, the Tobacco Control Commission (TCC), have shown.

During the first 10 weeks of trading last year, the green gold had raked in $124.7 million.

The figures indicate that as at Friday last week, sales volumes for all types of tobacco stood at 98,596,916 kilogrammes (kg) compared to 65,148,859 kgs sold during the same time last year, representing a 51.34 percent rise.

The traded volume is 66.7 percent of the 149 million kg estimated to have been produced by farmers this year.

However, average price remains relatively weak this year at $1.69 per kg, which is 11.17 percent shy of the $1.91 per kg that the leaf was fetching during the same time last year.

All things being equal, at the rate tobacco sales are going, Malawi could earn slightly over $252.9 million this year, compared to about $212 million earned last year.

The Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) says proceeds from tobacco have contributed to the stability of the kwacha and increased foreign exchange reserves.

In an interview on Friday, RBM spokesperson Mbane Ngwira said: “We cannot rule out the fact that the tobacco dollars are having an impact on the kwacha. There are some purchases that have been done from the market."

Tobacco Association of Malawi (Tama), a representative body of tobacco farmers, says it has no plans to stop growing the leaf despite government moving towards signing the World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO-FCTC).

FCTC, which entered into force on February 27 2005, is the first treaty negotiated under WHO to protect present and future generations from devastating heath, social, environmental and economic consequences of tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke."

According to AHL Group statistics, the country has sold 49,739,858 kilogrammes (kg) of tobacco, at an average price of $1.59 per kg.

Commenting on the sales, AHL Group Corporate Affairs Manager, Mark Ndipita, said even though some of the tobacco is being rejected, the levels are not alarming.

He said the rejection rate is recorded at 23 percent."

Minister of Agriculture, Joseph Mwanamvekha, has said new tobacco laws, expected to be tabled to Parliament soon, would help bring sanity in the industry.

The laws include the new Tobacco Act and the Control of Tobacco Auction Floors Act and are likely to be presented for review during the current meeting of Parliament.

In an interview on Sunday, Mwanamvekha said the laws would ensure that farmers, in particular, and the economy at large continue to realise more benefits from the green gold."

According to the report, as on Friday almost 12, 620,569 kilograms of tobacco were sold at an average price of $1.42 per kilogram realizing $18 million while last year 3.8 million kilograms were sold at an average price of $1.61 per kilogram with proceeds amounting $6.1 million.

The report, however, has indicated that despite weather challenges experienced during production of tobacco in the 2017-2018 season, the quality of tobacco presented on the market has so far proven to be good."

With more than a week left before the start of this year's tobacco selling season, growers of the

green gold have expressed optimism that the leaf would fetch better prices.

The growers are banking their hopes on reduced tobacco output which is below the volumes

demanded by international buyers in addition to improved quality of the leaf.

International buyers are looking for 171 million kilogrammes (kg) of all kinds of tobacco from

Malawi this year. Second round tobacco crop estimate results show that the country will produce

147 million kg of the green gold, representing a 24 million kg shortfall.
