Malawi’s first solar energy project reaches financial close | REVE News of the wind sector in Spain and in the world: One of Malawi’s first solar projects has reached financial close after attracting investment volume totaling $67 million USD. Initial site works have begun in Nkhotakota, and construction of the first phase is targeted for completion by March 2020. Once complete, the project will add 46 MW of clean energy to the local power supply.

Malawi: German Firm to Install Floating Solar Panels On Lake Malawi for Energy Generation - AllAfrica: One of the independent power producers (IPPs) that have signed power purchase agreements with Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), German firm Droege Energy, intends to install floating solar power panels on the Lake Malawi at Monkey Bay in Mangochi to generate power to be linked onto the ESCOM grid.

This was disclosed at the signing ceremony of 14 power purchase agreements (PPAs) involving ESCOM, Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) and three other IPPs held on Monday at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) Thursday signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Phanes Energy Limited that could add 21 megawatts (mw) to the national power grid by July 2019.

As the country continues to experience power challenges, a firm called ProjectCo has disclosed
plans to build a 40 megawatts (MW) solar power station in Salima.
ProjectCo is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) incorporated to develop, finance, build, own and
operate solar energy projects.
ProjectCO, whose shareholders include Canadian JCM Power, InfraCo Africa Limited of the UK
and South Africa's Matswani Capital, has since floated bids for firms to build the station.
The firm said the station will be built on an 80-hectare site within 4km of Salima's Nanjoka
substation in Malawi. The solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant is to be built under a full-wrap
turnkey, lump sum fixed price, date-certain engineering, procurement and construction contract in
combination with a long-term operation and maintenance contract.
