Illovo makes K8.1bn profit in six months - The Nation Online: Malawi) plc has reported a jump in profit to K8.1 billion in the six months ended February 28 2019 from K7 billion despite a drop in revenue.

Extracts from unaudited financial statements published yesterday show that revenue for the Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE)-listed sugar manufacturer dropped by K3.8 billion to K62.4 billion from K66.2 billion during the same period last year.

Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development says the K61 billion loan secured from the World Bank to finance Agricultural Commercialisation (Agcom) will help to commercialise the sector.

Speaking last Thursday in Salima on the sidelines of a stakeholders sensitisation meeting, the ministry’s director of planning and development Alex Namaona said the five-year Agcom is backbone for wealth creation.

Illovo profit hits K16.4 billion | The Times Group: Illovo Sugar Malawi recorded a K16.4 billion profit in the year-ended August 31 2018, up from K7 billion registered in 2017, the firm said on Thursday. Briefing investors in Chikwawa, the firm said, having produced 230,020 million tonnes of sugar last year, the company’s revenue rose to K141.8 billion from K124, 035 billion in 2017.

Coca-Cola fully acquires Chi Limited - Ventures Africa: The World Bank has earmarked a sum of $95 million to fund the Agricultural Commercialization (AGCOM) Project in Malawi over the next six years. The initiative is aimed at transforming the agriculture sector into a highly productive commercial division.

The overall objective of AGCOM for Malawi is to increase commercialization of agriculture value chain products and is targeted at livestock, aquaculture, and small and medium crop farmers that are in cooperatives to ensure sustained commercialization

Experts Call for Investment in Oil Grains: "An economic expert in the agriculture sector believes oil grains such as, soya, sunflower and groundnuts, could bring in more money to the country than tobacco, which is the current main forex earner.

Dr. Ted Nakhumwa, chief economist at the Auction Holdings Limited Commodity Exchange told Zodiak on Thursday that legumes can generate about US440 million per year, if they are sold through properly structured markets just like tobacco."
