The Technical Entrepreneurial and Vocation Education and Training Authority (Teveta) is grappling with financial woes that have crippled its function of supplying the economy with skilled labour force due to non-payment of levy by employers.

The law has it that all employers, including government, should be levied 1 percent of their total wage bills to finance the functions of Teveta, but defaults have totaled over K3 billion.

Government alone is yet to pay K2.6 billion to the authority while many companies fail to comply and plans are underway to have the levy collected by Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA).

The concerns were presented by Teveta Acting Executive Director Wilson Makulumiza to the Minister of Labour and Manpower Development Henry Mussa who met Teveta officials on Friday at Teveta House in Lilongwe.

The levy issue is limiting the functions of Teveta which has less than half of the required technical staff and is far from thinking of constructing its own college required t o train technical college instructors."
