Cotton Crop Promising In Malawi: "Cotton growers in Malawi are expecting high yields this year, cotton experts, who are projecting the high yield due to the increase in number of farmers, have told a radio in the country.

Chairperson of the Cotton Development Trust Patrick Khembo revealed that this year nearly half a million farmers are producing the cash crop, which on a higher sie than last year.

The chairperson told ZBS that the prevailing good rains which seem to be befitting for cotton growing will also necessitate the high yield.

Malawi’s trade deficit widened further in September 2012 to K34 billion (about $100m) from K26.8 billion (about $78.8m) the previous month, an indication that the country is importing more than it is exporting.

The National Statistical Office (NSO) January statistical bulletin indicates that the trade deficit worsened in the previous 12 months from K20 billion (about $58.8m) in September 2011 to K26.8 billion in August 2012 and widened further to K34 billion in September 2012."

Resources firm Springstone, a joint venture between Canada’s Gold Canyon Resources and Japan Oil, Gas & Metals National Corporation (Jogmec), has suspended its rare earths exploration project in the Mulanje Mountain area, in southern Malawi, as a result of legal wrangling with the surrounding community."
