Records from the Reserve Bank of Malawi indicate that the country’s import cover has this week increased from 65 days to 72 days.
This comes barely days after tobacco registered total earnings of $233.8 million from 113 million kgs sold so far.
Malawi needs a monthly import cover of $188.1 million and the central bank says gross official reserves increased to $452 million from $404 millio"

Cotton farmers continue to smile all the way to the bank as the buying price for the commodity in all the markets except Karonga, has jumped more than 195 percent above the government set minimum price.

Lilongwe — The World Bank says Malawi's economy is recovering with official figures' estimates showing an expected growth of 5.7 percent in agriculture and more than 6 percent growth in manufacturing.
The Bank disclosed this on Tuesday evening when its highly powered delegation of more than 10 officials had audience with President Dr. Joyce Banda at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe to present the Bank's overall assessment of the country's economy over the past 12 months. Leader of the delegation, Kundhavi Kadiresan, who is World Bank Country Director for Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe but based in Zambia, said the Bank had been following closely Malawi Government's efforts towards economic recovery and that it was pleasing to note that there were positive strides."

"Malawi uranium valued at K48 billion in 2012
Keyelekera: One of the biggest uranium mine in the country
A 2013 Malawi Government annual report has valued uranium total production at Malawi’s biggest mining investment, Kayelekera Uranium Mine, in Karonga at K47.75 billion.
"In 2012, the company produced 1,236 tonnes valued at $136.4 million equivalent of about K47.75 billion," reads the annual report in part, prepared by Malawi’s Ministry of Economic Planning and Development."
