Malawi sees another white maize surplus this year

LILONGWE (Reuters) - Malawi expects another surplus white maize crop this year of 3 million tonnes, but this will be smaller than last year's harvest due to bad weather and pests, the Ministry of Agriculture said on Wednesday. A seed and fertilizer subsidy programme supported by the British government has turned the southern African nation into a regional breadbasket in the last five years. The estimated 3 million-tonne harvest forecast for this year beats the country's domestic need of 2.4 million tonnes.

Malawi Tobacco Prices Climb 20% Above Government-Mandated Level

March 17 (Bloomberg) -- Tobacco prices in Malawi, Africa’s biggest producer of the burley variety of the crop, fetched an average of 20 percent more than government set prices at the first auction of the season, the industry regulator said.

Malawi February inflation quickens to 8.2 pct y/y
